These pieces were all constructed in the same way. First, I welded the basic frames together using steel rods, ranging from 1/4" to 1/2". Then, I cut shapes out of silk saris to fit into the shapes created by the frames, and hand-sewed them around the metal structures. All of the structures are strong enough to support people climbing onto them and, in some cases, sitting on fabric that has been stretched so taut that it can support quite a lot of weight. When I started making these structures, it was with the intention of simply highlighting the naturally beautiful aspects of steel and silk. And then, when I realized that part of the strength of both of these things is their ability to bend and stretch, it made sense to build structures that people could actually be apart of. With all of my work, I aim to use the materials as they are, but manipulate them in unconventional ways, forcing the viewer to relate to them as objects or patterns they recognize, but taking them out of their typical context.
